The car rental industry saw its inception in 1918 when Walter L. Jacobs, the pioneer of auto renting, started a small company in which he rented Model-T's that he had bought and repaired. The appeal of renting autos caught on immediately, and by the time Jacobs sold his company to John Hertz, the founder of Hertz Rent-A-Car, it was a million dollar a year business. Keep in mind that this was $1Million / year in 1923, a simply staggering figure.
Because of the obvious success of the car rental industry, it has attracted the attention of big businesses everywhere, creating one of the more competitive industries in the automotive industry. Companies like Chrysler, Ford and Chevrolet, realizing the potential for such a market, own several of the larger and more well-known car rental companies such as Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar.
